Captain Tyler Spaulding, owner of Carolina Boating School, is a USCG licensed Captain holding a 1600 ton Masters license and a 2nd Mate Unlimited, All Oceans with over 15 years of experience on the water.  He has worked in various positions on vessels all over the country and has sailed on commercial ships around the world.  Captain Tyler has served as a Strategic Sealift Officer in the US Navy Reserves for over 10 years.  Prior to moving to NC, he owned a charter fishing business on the Chesapeake Bay.  In his free time, Tyler enjoys offshore fishing, hunting, golf, and spending his time with his wife Stephanie and three kids Rose, Knox, and Palmer.

Meet the Team

Carolina Boating School is proud to offer you several USCG licensed Captains who bring 30+ years of local boating experience. Many of our Captains attended Maritime Academies where they spent years learning their craft.

  • Training Captain

    Captain Sean Riback is a USCG licensed Captain holding a 100 ton Masters License in addition to a 3rd Mate Unlimited Oceans License. With over 12 years of experience at sea, he has spent 8 years on tugboats moving barges up and down the East Coast. His experience includes everything from a 5,500hp tugboat pushing 500’ oil barges and dredges to his personal 17’ center console. Captain Sean enjoys sharing his passion for the water with new boaters and teaching them how to safely enjoy their vessels. In his free time, he enjoys custom woodworking, tinkering with anything mechanical and of course, spending time with his wife Becky.

  • Training Captain

    Captain Sal Escaldi is a USCG licensed captain holding a 1600 ton Master License and a 2nd Mate Unlimited Tonnage License.

    He has over 10 years of boating experience in the Cape Fear Region. For the past 2 years he has been sailing on offshore supply ships in the Gulf Of Mexico and Caribbean supplying offshore oil and gas installations with a variety of different cargos.

    In his off time, Captain Sal enjoys fishing and spending time with friends and family.

  • Training Captain

    Captain Phil Escaldi is a USCG-licensed captain. He grew up on the South Shore of Long Island and has 50 years of boating experience, 10 plus in the Cape Fear region.

  • Training Captain

    Captain Lou Barnum is a USCG licensed captain. He was born and grew up in the Carteret County area. He has been fishing and boating on the waters around Morehead City for over 45+ years. Captain Lou is very familiar with navigation Barden’s Inlet and Cape Lookout all the way to Bogue Inlet and the surrounding waters in between. He has been running inshore nearshore charters and eco-trips for the past 6 years. Captain Lou enjoys spearfishing, kiteboarding, fishing, and hunting. He loves to share his boating experience with new boaters and vacationing people.

  • Training Captain

    Captain Billy is a USCG licensed captain holding a 100 Ton Masters License. Areas of expertise range from charter fishing, commercial fishing, private yachting and sportfishing to deliveries and managing vessels for out-of-town owners along the east coast and Bahamas. Captain Billy enjoys sharing his passion for the water with new and experienced boaters and ensuring enjoyable safe operation of their vessels. In his free time, he enjoys spending more time on the water with friends recreational and tournament fishing and DIY projects and renovations.
